Introduction on using hair pieces

Caring for Synthetic Hair Pieces
Don't expose a synthetic hairpiece or wig to heat in excess of 160 degrees Farenheit, which will damage the wig fibers and cause them to frizz. This includes curling irons, hot rollers or blow dryers. In general, don't use products designed for human hair, unless the manufacturer's directions for your particular hairpiece indicate it's OK. Never brush any hairpiece when wet and avoid bleaches, colors or rinses.

Use hair care products specifically designed for synthetic hair and wash it after it's been worn 8 to 12 times. To wash your hairpiece, gently brush it with a wig brush first. Add one tablespoon of wig shampoo to a sink with cold water and immerse the wig for one minute, agitating gently. Rinse in cold water thoroughly, and then blot it. Next, apply a conditioning spray 10 to 12 inches from the hairpiece and allow it to dry on a wig stand or other slender object like a can of hairspray. Brush the piece only when it's completely dry.

Caring for Natural Hair Pieces
Although you can use regular shampoo and conditioning products on hairpieces made from human hair, it's a good idea to look for those formulated for chemically treated hair, which is gentler. Mix 1 to 2 ounces of shampoo in a bowl or basin filled with water, then submerge the hairpiece and soak for 5 minutes and rinse until all the shampoo is gone. Never use hot water which can strip color and always keep water flowing through the hair in a downward motion from base to ends. Try to avoid pushing the hairpiece up and down which may tangle strands. After gently squeezing out any excess water, spray the hairpiece with a leave-in hair conditioner/detangler. Wait and brush the hairpiece until it's completely dry, noting that you can use hair dryers and regular curlers and irons with these hairpieces.

Hairpieces for men and women are a great way to cover up thinning hair or baldness due to medical conditions, but they're also a wonderfully easy way for you to change your look almost instantly. Hairpieces come in a range of styles and price ranges, but with proper care and use, most will last a long time.
